The Friends of the Fort Lauderdale Libraries supports library programs and events throughout the year by providing funding or collaboration. These activities illustrate some of the ways that the Friends support the library and interact with community activities.

The Friends of the Fort Lauderdale Libraries provides hospitality to both Main and Fort Lauderdale branches for recognition of the library staff to acknowledge all of their outstanding and hard work.

Louisa May Alcott: The Woman Behind Little Women

Louisa May Alcott is recognized worldwide for her novel Little Women, but few know her as the bold, compelling woman who grew up in the innermost circle of the Transcendentalist and anti-slavery movements, served as a Civil War nurse, and led secret literary life writing pulp fiction. Louisa May Alcott was her own best character and life was her own best plot.

To support Louisa May Alcott: The Woman Behind Little Women, Broward County Library presents six programs from May through September 2011. These programs will re-introduce audiences to Louisa May Alcott’s story. These programs in the libraries are the result of a grant received from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the sponsorship of the Florida Center for the Book, the Broward County Public Library Foundation, the Friends of the Fort Lauderdale Libraries and WPBT2.

The first event took place on Saturday, May 7 at Alvin Sherman Library at Nova Southeaster University. This community-wide event for the whole family, focused on the life, works and times of Louisa May Alcott. There were Civil War re-enactors, period clothing and toys, film clips from the documentary film about her and an original play about her.

The second part of the series was at Main Library on Wednesday, June 8. There was a reading and discussion of Louisa May Alcott’s lesser known works with Scholar Dr. Christine Jackson of Nova Southeastern University. Dr. Jackson’s discussion helped display the range of Alcott’s writing and exemplify a strong connection to the culture in which she lived.

Tuesday, August 9 - 2 - 3 pm at South Regional/Broward College Library (7300 Pines Blvd., Pembroke Pines) - Louisa May Alcott: Literary Phenomenon and Social Reformer. Dr. Christine Jackson of Nova Southeastern University will focus on Alcott as a self-trained and successful professional writer.

Thursday, September 15 - 1 - 2 pm at Main Library (6th floor) - Reading and discussion of the biography Louisa May Alcott: The Woman Behind Little Women. This discussion will be led by Dr. Christine Jackson of Nova Southeastern University

Wednesday, September 21 - 2 - 4 pm at West Regional Library (8601 West Broward Blvd., Plantation) - Film Screening and discussion by Dr. Christine Jackson of Nova Southeastern University of Louisa May Alcott: The Woman Behind Little Women.

Thursday, September 22 - 2 - 3 pm at Main Library (6th floor) for pre-teens and teens - Writer and artist Susan Buzzi will talk about Louisa May alcott A young writer and have teens decorate and design their own journals.
