HISTORY OF THE FORT LAUDERDALE LIBRARIES AND THE FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY In a wonderful example of community activism in 1913, the Fort Lauderdale Women's Club organized the first library in Fort Lauderdale with 120 books. After several locations it moved in 1948 to 1300 East Sunrise, now called the Fort Lauderdale Branch. The Friends of the Fort Lauderdale Library purchased books for the collection and lobbied for a full time professional librarian. In 1963, the American Association of Women brought together numerous civic groups to form the first Friends organization. They had two major goals: The creation of a countywide library system and the passage of a bond issue to build a new main library. When the Main Library opened in 1984, the Friends became the Friends of the Fort Lauderdale Libraries and now support both libraries.
Board meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month with the exception of July, when there is no meeting. Meetings are from 5:30 pm – 7:30pm with the location alternating between the Main Library and the Fort Lauderdale Branch. Check the Calendar for location and room. |
